The League of Women Voters of Ohio/Education Fund is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that works to encourage informed and active participation in government, increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 as an outgrowth of the movement to give women the right to vote and it operates at the local, state and national levels.

Executive Director Position Summary
The League of Women Voters of Ohio/ Education Fund seeks a dynamic and dedicated executive director to lead the League. The executive director works closely with members of the Board to carry out the mission and goals of the League and reports to the President of the Board. The executive director is responsible for the overall administration and management of the League of Women Voters of Ohio/Education Fund, including membership and programming, advocacy, fundraising and organizational operations.

Key areas of responsibilities

Oversees organizational operations, including planning, financial management, and supervision of personnel

  • Manages a small but dynamic office in Columbus
  •  Assists with development and implementation of strategic plan
  •  Develops an active planning process and organizational goals consistent with the mission
  • Develops, recommends, and monitors annual and other budgets; Coordinates annual audit
  • Oversees fiscal record-keeping and reporting

Oversees member activities and events, including Statehouse Day and Convention

Coordinates advocacy activities of the League with an emphasis in promoting reform in the areas of election administration, campaign finance, judicial selection, redistricting and accountability

Leads fundraising efforts including foundation grants, major donor solicitation and growth of individual donor base

Communicates the League’s mission and priorities to the League’s constituencies through strategic use of print and electronic media

Manages and cultivates positive working relationships with staff, board, League members and volunteers, donors, media and community leaders

Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

Education/Experience:
BA required, Masters preferred
Five years management experience in non-profit sector. Previous executive director experience a plus.

Knowledge:
Understanding of the workings of a non-profit, membership organization. Business operational knowledge including management and budget. Familiarity with role of advocacy organization.

Skills/Competencies:
Action-oriented with a commitment to excellence and the mission of the League. Able to develop and implement a strategic plan. Effective leader with the ability to motivate a diverse group of volunteers, staff and community partners. Strong fundraiser with the skills to build and allocate resources. Able to prioritize and set measurable goals. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Able to be the face of the League as appropriate.

Technical Skills:
Proficiency with MS Office products and ability to quickly learn and apply new technology skills.

imPACT Project Program Manager

The League of Women Voters of Ohio Education Fund (LWVOEF) is continuing the Political Accountability for Citizens Today (imPACT) Project to provide opportunities for citizen engagement and education on critical public policy issues.

The key elements of the Ohio imPACT Project are to:
• Bring citizens together to engage in political dialogue.
• Provide local League members and citizens with strategies and tools to learn about implement citizen led Political Reform.
• Develop and implement methods for measuring project effectiveness.
• Provide opportunities for policymakers to interact with their constituents through public meetings, social media technology and other media tools to foster dialogue with opinion leaders and policymakers regarding Campaign Finance Reform, Election Reform, Judicial Impartiality and Fairness, Accountability and Redistricting.

Position Details

• Type of position: Grant-funded, full-time (40 hours per week) position
• Location: LWVOEF office is based in downtown Columbus office. Some state/national travel required.
• Estimated start date: No later than November 1, 2011
• Reports to: LWVOEF Executive Director

Position Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or three years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit sector.
• Must possess excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to make public presentations to large groups.
• Ability to work independently and interact successfully with a diverse group of professionals and volunteers.
• Must demonstrate proficiency with MS Office, database management, Photoshop, and Internet research.
• Proficiency in website management is required.
• Legislative experience preferred.
• Experience with citizen education/civic engagement desired.
• Previous experience working with grants/in grant-funded positions preferred.

Summary of Major Responsibilities

• Coordinate grant-funded program including program development, oversight, evaluation, reporting, internal and external communications and grant accounting.
• Work with League of Women Voters of Ohio Education Fund staff, and other project partners to develop and distribute necessary promotional and education material.
• Collaborate on imPACT activities with local Leagues around the state.
• Assist local Leagues to plan and implement community meetings/events on imPACT issues.
• Assist local Leagues to expand relationships with other community stakeholders to participate in the imPACT local community meetings.
• Write monthly electronic newsletter and inform LWVOEF communication on imPACT topics.
• Manage and maintain accurate and current Website information on imPACT topics.
• Design and deliver public presentations.
• Write and/or edit news releases and other project promotional materials related to imPACT.
• Work with executive director and accountant to ensure proper accounting of all grant related expenditure.
• Providing comprehensive reports on activities and expenditures.
• Other responsibilities as assigned by the executive director.

LWV Ohio Internship Positions

EVENT AND COMMUNICATIONS INTERN
The League of Women Voters of Ohio seeks a dynamic and motivated intern to support the League in its work to encourage informed and active participation in government, increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

This unpaid internship entails organizing legislative visits and materials, scheduling speakers and facilitators, and coordinating volunteers for the League’s Statehouse Day event on April 7. Regular projects include drafting correspondence and newsletter articles, updating various databases and mailing lists, and research to assist the office in its advocacy and membership services work. The ideal candidate has the ability to take initiative, strong communication skills, attention to detail and organize volunteers. The internship begins in February and continues through the beginning of June.

POLICY INTERN
The League of Women Voters of Ohio seeks a dynamic and motivated intern to support the League in its work to encourage informed and active participation in government, increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

This unpaid internship entails researching and writing on the Leagues key policy issues including redistricting, election laws, campaign finance, judicial reform and accountability. Activities would focus on presenting complex policy issues in a manner accessible to the public, League members and the Legislature.

The ideal candidate has the ability to take initiative, strong communication skills, attention to detail and capacity to manage multiple projects at once. Experience in government or politics is a plus. The internship begins in February and continues through the beginning of June.
